Spirometers
What is Spirometry?
Proper breathing is the key to good sleep, exercising without issues, and distributing oxygen throughout the bloodstream. It's not something we would think about often, as the ability to consume and expel air at a rate that keeps us balanced is involuntary. However, conditions such as allergies, asthma, and other lung diseases can inhibit our breathing, and accurately diagnosing the root cause is vital.
A spirometry test is commonly performed in an office to assess the condition of the lungs. Spirometers conduct respiratory analysis to find abnormalities in respiration, by measuring the amount of air you exhale and how quickly it's done. This data is then used to assess if you have a chronic lung condition, or how you're progressing on a treatment path. Pulmonologists refer to this test to check on a patient's lung health or before a planned surgery.
What is a Spirometer For?
- Spirometry tests are for diagnosing patients who may be experiencing lung conditions such as:
- Asthma.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
- Chronic Bronchitis.
- Pulmonary Fibrosis.
- Emphysema.
With a spirometer, it's much faster to assess and diagnose a patient for these conditions, though sometimes other scans may be required. Most spirometers will have a means to transmit or archive data.
How Does a Spirometer Work?
A spirometer consists of a mouthpiece, and the device that analyzes the breath sample. The patient breathes through the mouthpiece, at the doctor's instructions, and then the device measures the exhale and volume.
Most spirometers that MFI carries features a digital screen for quick analysis of the patient's pulmonary function. For example, the MIR Spirobank II Basic Spirometer is a convenient handheld spirometer that can store up to 10,000 test results on its internal storage. These types of handheld digital spirometers are often portable as well, allowing for specialists to check on patients in the field, or other clinics and offices. Other spirometers such as the ndd Medical EasyOne Pro Single Breath DLCO System are designed as part of a laboratory suite, and feature larger screens for more thorough results and read-outs, mobile carts for transportation, printers, and more.
