Frequently asked questions

Is this elevator suitable for delicate neurosurgical procedures?

Yes, the Sklar Cushing Elevator, often called the “little joker,” is specifically engineered for neurosurgical applications. Its design provides the high level of precision and control necessary to effectively separate membranes from bone during cranial or spinal surgery.

What type of stainless steel is used for construction?

This instrument is manufactured from high-quality, surgical-grade stainless steel. This material selection ensures:

  • Exceptional durability for long-term clinical use.
  • Corrosion resistance within the demanding environments of sterile surgical suites.
Is the handle design ergonomic for long surgeries?

The handle features a hollow, concave design that is purpose-built for the practitioner’s comfort. This shape allows for a secure and stable grip, facilitating the delicate, fine-motor maneuvers required for precise membrane separation.

Does the blunt tip enhance procedural safety?

Yes, the blunt-tip configuration is a key feature of the Cushing Elevator. It is designed to maximize safety for the patient by minimizing the risk of accidental tissue puncture while still maintaining the functionality required for effective periosteal elevation.

Can this instrument be reused after sterilization?

Absolutely. This is a reusable instrument designed for repeated clinical use. Please note that it arrives non-sterile, so it must be processed through your facility’s standard sterilization protocols before its first use.

Is the blade width effective for membrane separation?

The 6mm blade width is specifically dimensioned to provide the optimal surface area for wedging the tool between the periosteum and the bone. The slight curvature of the blade further assists in applying the correct leverage.

Are there any natural rubber latex materials used?

No, this product is strictly not made with natural rubber latex, making it a safe choice for surgical environments where latex sensitivity is a concern for staff or patients.

Is this product TAA compliant for government use?

Yes, the Sklar Cushing Elevator is TAA compliant, meeting the requirements necessary for procurement in government-affiliated or regulated healthcare facilities.

How does the instrument handle compare to standard designs?

Unlike basic handles, the hollow, concave handle on this model is optimized for neurosurgery. It strikes a balance between minimalist weight and a tactile, ergonomic feel that prevents slipping during intense, high-focus procedural movements.

Does the blade have a sharp edge?

The instrument features a smooth, blunt working edge. This design ensures that the elevator performs its primary function of membrane separation without the risks associated with a sharpened or cutting edge.
