Description

The Sklar Black Pederson Vaginal Speculum is used for laser gynecological procedures. It is a double blade duckbill speculum inserted with the blades closed. The blades are then opened by an external lever and screw. The blades of the Pederson Speculum are more narrow than the blades of the Graves Speculum. The practitioner can best determine which type and size speculum is most appropriate for the patient. The Sklar Black Pederson Vaginal Speculum is available with a permanent smoke evacuation tube, a loop for disposable smoke evacuation tubing, or no smoke evacuation. Sklar Black Laser instruments feature a non-reflective black polymer coating applied over the sandblasted instrument developed specifically for laser surgeries. This safe, durable coating reduces laser reflection to less than one-tenth of a percent, ensuring a safer surgical environment for patients and surgical staff. All Sklar Black coated instruments comply with biological testing requirements for cytotoxicity, sensitization regulatory, and ISO 10993 requirements. They also comply with the Pre-Vacuum and Gravity Cycle Steam Sterilization Validation of ANSI/AAMI ST79. This product is a medium speculum with 4" X 7/8" blades. It does not have a smoke evacuation tube.

Frequently asked questions

Does the coating really improve laser safety?

Yes. This speculum is engineered with a specialized, non-reflective black polymer coating applied over sandblasted stainless steel. This surface effectively absorbs energy, resulting in a laser reflection rate of less than one-tenth of one percent, which significantly enhances safety for both the patient and the surgical staff during laser procedures.

Is this speculum durable for repeated use?

Absolutely. This is a factory-new, reusable instrument constructed from high-quality stainless steel. It is designed to withstand the rigors of surgical environments and repeated sterilization cycles without compromising its structural integrity.

Why choose the Pederson blade design?

The Pederson design is specifically favored by practitioners for its narrower blade profile compared to the Graves speculum. This design is often advantageous for patient anatomy that requires more precise visual access during gynecological examinations and procedures.

Is this instrument easy to sterilize?

Yes, it is designed for standard clinical sterilization protocols. It meets the ANSI/AAMI ST79 standards, specifically regarding:

  • Pre-Vacuum cycle steam sterilization.
  • Gravity cycle steam sterilization.

Always ensure your facility follows these validated protocols for consistent instrument maintenance.

Does this meet medical regulatory standards?

The instrument is fully compliant with rigorous medical requirements, including ISO 10993 for biological testing. This covers essential safety benchmarks such as:

  • Cytotoxicity.
  • Sensitization regulatory requirements.
Is this safe for patients with latex allergies?

Yes. This product is guaranteed to be not made with natural rubber latex, making it a suitable choice for patients with latex sensitivities.

How does the blade opening mechanism work?

The instrument utilizes a reliable external lever and screw mechanism. The process is as follows:

  1. Insert the double-bladed duckbill speculum while the blades are closed.
  2. Once in position, use the external lever to adjust the blade opening.
  3. Secure the position using the screw mechanism for hands-free stability.
Is this model designed for smoke evacuation?

This specific variant does not include smoke evacuation hardware. It is configured without a permanent tube or loops for disposable tubing. If your procedure requires integrated smoke evacuation, please check for models that include that specific apparatus.

Is the medium size suitable for standard procedures?

The medium size, featuring 4” X 7/8” blades, is a standard configuration that offers a balance between access and patient comfort. The Pederson style ensures that even at this medium size, the profile remains narrow to assist in achieving optimal visualization.

Are there specific environments where this is best used?

This speculum is essential equipment for laser gynecological surgical suites. It is an optimal choice whenever practitioners are utilizing laser energy sources where the minimization of laser reflection is a critical safety component.
