Description

  • Plain gut absorbable sterile surgical sutures are composed of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from the serosal layer of beef (bovine) intestines. They are packaged in a solution of 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolmaine
  • Plain gut sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic surgery, but not in cardiovascular, neurological or microsurgery
  • When Plain, Chromic and Mild Chromic gut absorbable sutures are placed in tissue, a moderate tissue inflammation occurs characteristic of foreign body response to a substance
  • This is followed by a gradual loss of tensile strength and suture mass, as the enzymatic process dissolves the surgical gut until it is completely absorbed

Frequently asked questions

What is this suture primarily used for?

These sutures are designed for general soft tissue approximation and ligation. They are also specifically indicated for use in ophthalmic procedures due to their precise design and predictable absorption profile.

Is this suture suitable for cardiovascular or neurological surgery?

No, these sutures are not indicated for use in cardiovascular, neurological, or microsurgery. They are specifically intended for general soft tissue and ophthalmic applications.

What are the benefits of the P-13 needle?

The P-13 needle is precision-engineered with a 3/8 circle, reverse cutting geometry. This design offers:

  • Excellent control during suturing.
  • Reduced tissue trauma compared to traditional cutting needles.
  • Clean and precise tissue entry.
Is this a monofilament or braided suture?

This is a monofilament suture. Monofilament construction is generally preferred for its smooth passage through tissue, which helps minimize potential trauma.

How does the absorption process work?

The suture is made from purified bovine collagen, which undergoes a natural enzymatic degradation process. After implantation, the body induces a standard inflammatory response to the material, followed by a gradual reduction in tensile strength as enzymes dissolve the thread until full absorption is achieved.

What is the material composition of this suture?

This is a monofilament suture made from purified bovine connective tissue (specifically collagen derived from the serosal layer of bovine intestines). It is provided in an undyed, sterile state.

What is the length of the suture strand?

Each strand is 18 inches (approximately 45 cm) long, which is a standard length for general soft tissue approximation tasks.

Does the packaging require special handling?

Yes, the sutures are maintained in a specialized packaging solution consisting of 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolamine to ensure sterility and material integrity until the moment of use.

How large is the needle?

The P-13 needle has a length of 13 mm, making it a precise instrument well-suited for delicate or confined surgical areas.

How many sutures are in a single pack?

Each unit contains 36 strands of the specified 5-0 Plain Gut suture.
