The Sklar TC Mayo-Hegar Needle Holder is a ratcheted, finger ring instrument available in a wide range of lengths, and used in multiple types of surgical procedures. Due to it's versatility, it is one of the most commonly used surgical tools for both human and animal procdures. Shorter length products may be used in oral, gynecological, or dermatological procedures, as well as with small animals. Larger lengths of this product may be used for deep tissue suturing such as in bariatric procedures, or in large animal procedures. The Mayo-Hegar needle holder is commonly used with larger, heavier suture needles because of it's wide jaws. Tungsten carbide inserts also maximize control and precision. Frequently asked questions

Are the tungsten carbide inserts effective for precision?

Yes, the tungsten carbide (TC) inserts are specifically integrated to maximize control and precision. These inserts provide a superior grip, ensuring that your needle handling is both stable and accurate during delicate suturing tasks.

Can this handle heavy-duty suturing tasks?

Absolutely. This needle holder is designed with a robust jaw configuration featuring cross-serrated working edges, making it ideal for securely grasping and maneuvering larger, heavier suture needles commonly used in deep tissue or bariatric procedures.

Is the 14-inch length suitable for deep tissue work?

Yes, the 14-inch length is specifically designed for procedures requiring deeper access, such as bariatric surgery. Its length and straight configuration allow for reliable reach and control where standard-sized needle holders may fall short.

Does it have a reliable locking mechanism?

It does. The instrument features a secure ratchet mechanism built into the dual finger ring handle. This ensures that the needle is held firmly in place during use, providing the surgeon with confidence and stability throughout the procedure.

Is the instrument safe for patients with latex allergies?

Yes, this instrument is not made with natural rubber latex, making it a safe choice for surgical environments where latex sensitivity or allergies are a concern.

Is this instrument built to last through many procedures?

Constructed from premium stainless steel and engineered for reusable, factory-new performance, this instrument is designed for high-frequency clinical use. It is a professional-grade tool built to withstand the rigors of surgical environments.

Does the gold handle indicate a specific grade?

The dual gold finger rings signify the Sklar Premium Grade quality of the instrument. This aesthetic indicator is a hallmark of the TC (tungsten carbide) insert series, identifying it as a high-performance tool for professional surgical applications.

Are there specific procedures this tool is best for?

While highly versatile, it is particularly recommended for:

  • Deep tissue suturing (e.g., bariatric surgery)
  • Large animal veterinary procedures
  • Oral, gynecological, or dermatological surgeries where extended reach is required.
Does the instrument arrive ready for immediate surgical use?

No, it is supplied non-sterile. You will need to perform appropriate cleaning and sterilization processing according to your facility’s protocols before it can be used in a clinical or surgical setting.

Is the cross-serrated design better for holding needles?

Yes, the cross-serrated jaw pattern is engineered to provide multi-directional friction. This design effectively prevents needle rotation and slippage, ensuring a secure hold even when using larger or heavier suture needles.
