Description

Sklar's TC Crile-Wood Needle Holder is used to hold and guide small to medium size needles and suture materials. The Crile-Wood Needle Holder has a gently tapered, blunt tip and is generally more delicate than the Mayo-Hegar but slightly less delicate than Webster, Halsey, or DeBakey needle holders. The ratcheted finger ring handle aids in securing needles for both continuous and interrupted closures. Tungsten Carbide instruments are designed to stay sharp for a significantly longer period of time than other standard instruments. Sklar permanently bonds tungsten carbide inserts to the instrument, which maximizes control and precision. This product is straight with cross-serrated tips, and an overall length of 14 inches.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tungsten carbide insert improve performance?

Yes, the permanently bonded tungsten carbide (TC) inserts are specifically designed to significantly extend the sharpness of the instrument over time. This ensures consistent precision, better control, and increased longevity compared to standard stainless steel instruments.

Is this tool suitable for delicate suturing work?

The Crile-Wood / DeBakey design offers an ideal balance for surgical tasks. It is more delicate than Mayo-Hegar holders, providing superior precision for small to medium needles, yet it remains robust enough for reliable handling compared to Webster or Halsey styles.

How secure is the grip during suturing?

The instrument features cross-serrated tips that provide a firm, non-slip grip on the needle. Combined with the reliable ratchet mechanism on the handle, it ensures the needle remains securely locked in place during both continuous and interrupted closure techniques.

Is the material safe for those with latex allergies?

Yes, this instrument is made without natural rubber latex, making it a safe choice for surgical environments where latex-free compliance is required.

What is the recommended method for cleaning this instrument?

As this is a reusable surgical instrument, it must be properly sterilized post-use. Please follow your facility’s standard protocol for cleaning and sterilization of stainless steel surgical instruments to ensure the longevity of the metal and the tungsten carbide inserts.

What size needles is this holder optimized for?

This 14-inch holder is specifically engineered for handling small to medium size needles and associated suture materials, offering the precision needed for a variety of closure procedures.

Are the gold-accented rings just for show?

While the gold-accented finger rings provide a distinct professional aesthetic, they are a signature feature of Sklar’s premium line, denoting the high-quality construction and the inclusion of the durable tungsten carbide inserts.

Is this instrument compliant with professional standards?

Yes, this is a TAA Compliant (Trade Agreements Act) instrument, meeting professional quality and manufacturing standards for use in clinical and surgical settings.

How should I store this needle holder?

Because the instrument arrives in a non-sterile state, it should be stored in a clean, dry, and protected environment until it has undergone its initial sterilization process. Once processed, it should be kept in a sterile field or storage to maintain its readiness for surgery.

Is the construction durable enough for daily hospital use?

Absolutely. Built to Sklar Premium Grade standards, this instrument is designed for professional surgical use. The combination of stainless steel construction and permanently bonded tungsten carbide ensures the tool is highly durable and maintains its performance standards under repeated use.
