Description

Sklar's Littauer Cutting Forceps are a non-ratcheted, plier handle instrument used primarily for cutting nail and bone. As nail nippers they are used for nail debridement. They may also be used to nip delicate bones found in the facial and nasal region, or small animal (mice) veterinary procedures. The short, sharp blades are able to produce enough force to cut through thick nail and small bone, but delicate enough not to cause trauma to surrounding tissue or organs. This is particularly helpful with nail debridement which should be completed in short, small sections to avoid damage to the hyponychium. This product has straight jaws with smooth edges and an overall length of 4-1/2 inches. The back, outside edge of the blades is curved.

Frequently asked questions

Are these forceps durable enough for professional use?

Yes, these forceps are designed for longevity. Manufactured from high-quality stainless steel, they are engineered specifically for repeated sterilization and frequent use in demanding professional medical or veterinary environments.

Can these be used on thick nails safely?

Absolutely. These forceps are purpose-built for nail debridement. Their design provides enough force to cut through thick nails, while the short, sharp blades ensure you can work in small sections to protect delicate underlying tissue like the hyponychium.

How do the handles feel during delicate procedures?

The forceps feature an ergonomic plier-style handle combined with a spring mechanism. This design allows for a very natural, controlled grip, making it easier to apply precise pressure during intricate tasks.

Is the material safe for patients with allergies?

Yes, this instrument is latex-free. It is constructed entirely from stainless steel and does not contain natural rubber latex, making it a safe choice for diverse patient populations.

What is the primary benefit of the curved back blades?

The curved back configuration is specifically engineered to offer better visibility and access in tight spaces. It allows for more precise maneuverability when snipping delicate bones or working in restricted anatomical areas, such as the facial or nasal regions.

Are these forceps suitable for veterinary procedures?

They are indeed well-suited for small animal veterinary applications. The precision and controlled cutting force make them an excellent tool for various minor surgeries and examinations that require delicate, reliable instrument performance.

Do I need to sterilize them before first use?

Yes. These forceps ship non-sterile. Because they are a reusable surgical instrument, you should follow your facility’s standard protocols for cleaning and sterilization before incorporating them into any medical procedure.

Is this a TAA-compliant medical instrument?

Yes, this product is TAA compliant. This ensures that the instrument meets the necessary trade agreement standards often required for procurement in government-affiliated medical or veterinary facilities.

How heavy are these forceps in hand?

These are lightweight, precision tools. They weigh approximately 0.01 pounds, ensuring they remain comfortable to hold and maneuver during longer procedures without causing hand fatigue.

Are they reliable for fine bone cutting?

Yes, they are highly reliable for such tasks. The blades are designed to balance powerful cutting capability with the delicacy needed to prevent trauma to surrounding structures, making them ideal for cutting small bones in ENT or ophthalmic applications.
