Description

Sklar's Kogan endocervical speculum is a gynecological instrument used for viewing the distal endocervical canal. Unlike a traditional, duckbill speculum, this single spring, locking, finger-ring instrument features opposing, fenestrated blades at the end of long jaws. The jaws and blades extend deeper into the cervix and can therefore retract deeper tissue. An endocervical speculum is frequently used in colposcopy procedures, or where polyps cannot be easily visualized. The Kogan comes in wide or narrow blade, with or without a ratchet handle. Sklar Blue electrosurgical instruments have an insulated coating to prevent radio frequency currents from being transmitted through the instrument - thereby reducing burning of non-targeted tissues. Sklar Blue instruments are fully autoclavable and may also be cleaned ultrasonically.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sklar Blue coating effective for electrosurgical safety?

Yes, the Sklar Blue coating is a specialized non-conductive, insulated finish designed specifically to prevent the transmission of radio frequency currents. This helps to mitigate the risk of unintended burning to adjacent non-targeted tissues during electrosurgical procedures.

How does this speculum differ from standard duckbill models?

Unlike standard duckbill specula, this Kogan model features long jaws with opposing, fenestrated blades. This design allows for:

  • Deeper retraction: Accessing tissue deeper into the cervical canal.
  • Superior visualization: Better utility in colposcopy or when viewing challenging polyps.
Is this instrument built for long-term clinical use?

Absolutely. It is constructed from high-quality stainless steel and is specifically engineered to be fully reusable. It is designed for longevity and can withstand the rigors of frequent clinical application.

What is the best way to clean and sterilize this instrument?

This speculum is designed for easy reprocessing to support busy clinical environments:

  • Autoclaving: Fully compatible with standard autoclaving protocols.
  • Ultrasonic Cleaning: May also be safely cleaned using ultrasonic methods.
Does the handle design ensure secure positioning?

Yes, it features a single spring, locking, finger-ring handle mechanism. This design provides the clinician with tactile control and allows for secure, stable positioning during delicate procedures.

Is this product manufactured with any latex materials?

No, this instrument is not made with natural rubber latex, making it a safe choice for use with patients who have latex sensitivities.

Is this wide-blade model suitable for difficult colposcopies?

It is an ideal choice for colposcopy. The wide blade configuration is specifically intended for scenarios where visualization is challenging or where the practitioner needs to retract tissue more effectively to access hidden areas like the endocervical canal.

Does this instrument meet specific government procurement standards?

Yes, this product is TAA compliant, meeting the regulatory requirements for medical instrumentation procurement.

What is the total length of the instrument?

The total instrument length is 9-1/2 inches, providing the reach necessary for endocervical access while maintaining a manageable size for handheld operation.

Is the instrument supplied sterile or non-sterile?

The instrument is supplied non-sterile. It should be processed according to your facility’s standard sterilization protocols (such as autoclaving) before its first use.
