Description

The Sklar Black Lateral Vaginal Retractor is a ratcheted, finger ring OB/GYN instrument that may be used in conjunction with most vaginal specula to provide a greater view of vaginal walls and cervix. It is particularly useful with women who are obese, elderly, or otherwise have poorly toned vaginal walls. The jaws and blades of the lateral vaginal retractor slide through the speculum and when opened, push back excess or relaxed vaginal wall tissue. This provides for a better visual examination as well as increases the likelihood of obtaining adequate tissue samples. The locking mechanism allows the retractor to remain open while procedures are conducted. This product has two thin blades and features a non-reflective black polymer coating for use in laser procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Does the non-reflective coating interfere with laser safety?

No, it is specifically engineered to enhance safety. The non-reflective black polymer coating is designed to minimize light interference and glare, making it highly suitable for precise laser-assisted procedures.

Is this retractor suitable for patients with relaxed vaginal tissue?

Yes, it is specifically indicated for such cases. The retractor is designed to:

  • Gently push back relaxed vaginal wall tissue.
  • Significantly improve the visual field for exams.
  • Provide better access for tissue sample collection, especially in geriatric or obese patients.
How does the hands-free mechanism work?

The instrument features an integrated ratcheted locking mechanism. Once the blades are opened to the desired width to retract the vaginal walls, the ratchet allows the device to stay securely locked in place, freeing up the medical professional’s hands during the procedure.

Is the material durable for frequent clinical use?

Yes, the instrument is constructed from high-quality stainless steel. This material selection ensures:

  • Long-term reliability and durability.
  • Capability to withstand repeated sterilization cycles.
  • A robust, professional-grade build quality.
Does it require specific maintenance before its first use?

Yes, this instrument is shipped non-sterile. It must be properly cleaned and sterilized according to your facility’s established protocols for surgical instruments before it is used in any clinical or procedural setting.

Can this be used with standard vaginal specula?

Absolutely. The retractor is designed to complement existing specula systems. Its thin blade configuration allows it to be inserted through a standard vaginal speculum to provide the extra retraction needed for improved visualization.

Is the material safe for patients with sensitivities?

The Sklar Black Laser Lateral Vaginal Retractor is not made with natural rubber latex, making it a safer option for patients with latex allergies.

How do I care for the black polymer coating?

As with any specialized surgical instrument, it should be handled with care to maintain the integrity of the coating. Since it is reusable, follow standard clinical guidelines for the cleaning and sterilization of stainless steel instruments coated with medical-grade polymers to ensure it remains in optimal condition.

Is this instrument designed for long-term clinical reliability?

Yes, Sklar emphasizes long-term performance. The instrument is backed by a lifetime warranty, reflecting the manufacturer’s commitment to the quality and longevity of their stainless steel tools.

How heavy is the instrument for the user?

The retractor is exceptionally lightweight, weighing approximately 0.01 pounds. This low-profile design ensures that it does not cause hand fatigue for the practitioner while maintaining the necessary strength for effective tissue retraction.
