Description

Merit Sterile Spencer (Littauer) Stitch Scissors are primarily used for suture removal. These scissors have a small hook shaped tip on one blade that slides under sutures to slightly lift them before cutting for removal. This hook also holds the suture so it does not slip off the blade of the scissors prior to cutting. They are most commonly available in lengths of 3-1/2" and 4-1/2" and therefore typically have smaller, more delicate tips that are used for removing smaller sutures. They should not be used for cutting tissue. Merit Sterile instruments are ready-to-use, sterile, disposable, office-grade instruments most commonly utilized for routine and in-office minor procedures. They are sold in bulk quantities.

Frequently asked questions

Does the hook tip improve patient safety?

Yes, the specialized hook-tipped blade is a key safety feature. It allows you to:

  • Lift and secure the suture away from the skin.
  • Prevent accidental tissue damage by providing a stable guide for the cut.
  • Minimize slippage to ensure a clean and efficient removal process.
Are these scissors suitable for tissue dissection?

No, these scissors are strictly engineered for suture removal only.

They feature a delicate, 3-1/2 inch profile specifically intended for cutting thread. Using them for tissue dissection could compromise the instrument’s performance and is not their intended medical application.

Are these made from high-quality stainless steel?

Yes, these scissors are crafted from durable, professional-grade stainless steel. They are designed to meet Sklar’s high manufacturing standards, ensuring consistent performance and precision during minor medical procedures.

Is the material safe for patients with latex allergies?

Yes, these instruments are 100% latex-free. They are not manufactured using natural rubber latex, making them a safe choice for a broad range of patients in clinical or outpatient settings.

Does the disposable design help maintain a sterile environment?

Absolutely. Because these scissors are individually sterile and disposable, they provide several clinical benefits:

  • Eliminate sterilization costs and maintenance cycles.
  • Reduce the risk of cross-contamination between patients.
  • Ensure consistent readiness for every minor procedure.
Are these scissors easy to handle during procedures?

They are designed with standard finger rings for a comfortable, professional grip. The straight, narrow shank design and 3-1/2 inch length offer excellent control and visibility when working on small, precise suture sites.

What settings are these primarily designed for?

These are ideal for high-volume environments, including:

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Dermatology offices
  • General practice clinics

They are frequently included in sterile kits for routine postoperative care and suture removal.

Are they delivered ready for immediate clinical use?

Yes, each unit is provided in a sterile, ready-to-use format. You can open the package and proceed with the removal immediately, which helps streamline your clinical workflow and saves valuable preparation time.

How are the scissors packaged for office storage?

These scissors are conveniently supplied in bulk cases of 25 units. This packaging is designed for high-volume medical environments, ensuring that you always have an ample supply of sterile instruments on hand.

Is the blade design reliable for thin sutures?

Yes, the blunt/blunt tip configuration combined with the precision hook allows for controlled, smooth cutting. The hook acts as a stabilizer to catch the suture, ensuring that even thin threads are held firmly in place for a precise, clean snip.
