Description

Sklar's® plier handle cast spreader is used for spreading apart and removing the somewhat softer non-fiberglass casting material once it has been cut and prepared for removal. It features three flat blades -- two side by side and one on the opposing side. Once entered in the closed position into the cut on the cast, the handle is squeezed to widen the blades and spread the cast. This product is similar in profile to the Walton in this product class, yet the Walton handles harder fiberglass or plaster.

Frequently asked questions

Is this instrument built for heavy clinical use?

Yes, the Merit Cast Spreader is crafted from high-quality stainless steel, making it a durable, physician-grade instrument designed for repeated use in professional medical environments.

Can this be used for thick, hardened fiberglass casts?

No, this specific instrument is optimized for softer, non-fiberglass casting materials. It features a specialized design intended for softer materials, distinct from the Walton spreader which is designed for harder, rigid casts.

Does the design provide a secure grip on the cast?

Absolutely. The working edges of the instrument tips are serrated, which helps maintain a secure hold on the cast material while the plier-style mechanism provides the necessary leverage for spreading.

How does the three-prong mechanism work?

The instrument utilizes a 3-prong configuration for efficient spreading:

  • Two prongs are positioned side-by-side.
  • The third prong is positioned on the opposing side.
  • When the plier-style handles are squeezed, the blades widen to cleanly separate the incised cast material.
Is this tool suitable for patients with latex allergies?

Yes, the Merit Cast Spreader is not made with natural rubber latex, ensuring it is safe for use in clinical settings with patients who have latex sensitivities.

How long is this surgical instrument?

The instrument has a total length of 9 inches, providing an ideal size for comfortable manual control and leverage during orthopedic cast removal procedures.

Does it arrive ready for immediate surgical use?

The instrument is supplied non-sterile. Please ensure it undergoes the appropriate sterilization process required by your facility’s protocols before use in a clinical setting.

Is the handle designed for ergonomic operation?

Yes, it features a plier-style handle that allows for natural hand positioning and significant mechanical leverage, making it easier to spread cast materials with precision.

What is the expected lifespan of this instrument?

Because it is manufactured to high physician-grade standards from durable stainless steel, it is built to last and comes with a Lifetime warranty against defects.

Is this a versatile tool for general orthopedics?

It is an essential tool specifically for orthopedic procedures involving the removal of standard plaster or soft, non-fiberglass casting materials, making it a reliable staple for any orthopedic care kit.
