Description

Medtronic Maxon Monofilament Synthetic Absorbable Cutting Sutures. MAXON synthetic absorbable sutures are prepared from polyglyconate, a copolymer of glycolic acid and trimethylene carbonate. The advanced extrusion process of the molecule of polyglyconate gives the suture: Excellent in-vivo strength retention; Excellent knot tying security; Excellent handling; Minimal memory. MAXON synthetic absorbable sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in pediatric cardiovascular tissue, where growth is expected to occur, and in peripheral vascular surgery. MAXON synthetic absorbable sutures are not indicated for use in adult cardiovascular tissue, ophthalmic surgery, microsurgery and neural tissues.

Frequently asked questions

What high-quality synthetic material is used?

The Medtronic Maxon sutures are constructed from Polyglyconate, a synthetic, absorbable monofilament material. This polymer is chemically defined as a copolymer of glycolic acid and trimethylene carbonate.

Thanks to an advanced extrusion process, this material delivers critical performance attributes:

  • Excellent Strength Retention: Ensures reliable in-vivo strength retention for dependable temporary wound support.
  • Superior Handling: Offers excellent handling characteristics and minimal material memory.
  • Optimal Knot Security: Provides excellent knot tying security, crucial for successful soft tissue approximation and ligation.
What surgical procedures are recommended?

These Medtronic MAXON Monofilament sutures are approved for procedures requiring strong temporary wound support followed by predictable absorption. They are primarily indicated for:

  • General soft tissue approximation and ligation
  • Peripheral vascular surgery
  • Use in pediatric cardiovascular tissue where growth is expected

Important Contraindications

MAXON sutures are explicitly not indicated and should not be used in the following specialized surgical areas:

  • Adult cardiovascular tissue
  • Ophthalmic surgery
  • Microsurgery
  • Neural tissues
Are these sutures suitable for adult cardiovascular tissue?

No, Medtronic Maxon sutures are not indicated for use in adult cardiovascular tissue.

They are specifically designed and indicated for use in:

  • General soft tissue approximation and/or ligation
  • Pediatric cardiovascular tissue (where tissue growth is expected)
  • Peripheral vascular surgery
What specific cutting needles are provided?

The Medtronic Maxon sutures are equipped with specific straight cutting needles. The type of needle provided is dependent on the suture size configuration:

  • SC-2 Needle: Included with Size 4-0 and Size 3-0 sutures.
  • SC-250 Needle: Included with Size 2-0 sutures.

These cutting needles complement the polyglyconate monofilament material, which is known for its excellent handling, minimal memory, and superior knot tying security.

What sizes are available for these sutures?

Medtronic Maxon sutures are available in several sizes, including 4-0, 3-0, and 2-0.

Are Medtronic Maxon sutures absorbable?

Yes, Medtronic Maxon sutures are synthetic absorbable sutures.

What is the suture length included in each package?

Each suture has a length of 30 inches.

What does 'excellent in-vivo strength retention' mean?

“Excellent in-vivo strength retention” signifies the superior ability of the suture to maintain its tensile strength and structural integrity while implanted in the body during the critical tissue healing period. This high strength retention is achieved through the advanced extrusion process of the polyglyconate molecule. This critical feature ensures two main benefits for surgical performance: * Reliable Support: The suture provides sustained, dependable holding power necessary for effective soft tissue approximation and ligation.* Optimal Healing: Tissues receive adequate time to heal and gain intrinsic strength before the suture’s natural absorption process significantly degrades the material.
