Description

  • Plain gut absorbable sterile surgical sutures are composed of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from the serosal layer of beef (bovine) intestines. They are packaged in a solution of 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolmaine
  • Plain gut sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic surgery, but not in cardiovascular, neurological or microsurgery
  • When Plain, Chromic and Mild Chromic gut absorbable sutures are placed in tissue, a moderate tissue inflammation occurs characteristic of foreign body response to a substance
  • This is followed by a gradual loss of tensile strength and suture mass, as the enzymatic process dissolves the surgical gut until it is completely absorbed

Frequently asked questions

What surgical applications is this suture best for?

This suture is specifically indicated for general soft tissue approximation and ligation, and it is particularly well-suited for ophthalmic surgery due to its precision design.

Is this suture safe for cardiovascular or neurological use?

No, this product is not intended for use in cardiovascular, neurological, or microsurgical applications.

Why is the reverse cutting needle preferred for this suture?

The 3/8 circle precision reverse cutting needle is engineered to provide smooth tissue penetration while minimizing drag and trauma during fine surgical maneuvers.

What material is this absorbable suture made from?

It is crafted from purified bovine intestinal connective tissue (primarily collagen), which ensures predictable absorption and reliable interaction with biological tissues.

Is the needle double-armed?

Yes, this specific model is equipped with a double-armed precision reverse cutting needle to facilitate complex surgical tasks requiring fine control.

How does the suture degrade in the body?

After implantation, the suture elicits a controlled, moderate inflammatory response which initiates the enzymatic degradation process. It gradually loses both tensile strength and mass over time.

How is the suture stored in the packaging?

The sutures are supplied in a preservation solution consisting of 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolamine to maintain sterility and product integrity.

Is this a monofilament suture?

Yes, this product is a 6-0 monofilament suture, providing the necessary characteristics for smooth, reliable tissue approximation.

What is the needle size and shape?

The needle is an 11 mm 3/8 circle stainless steel precision reverse cutting needle.

What is the total length of each suture strand?

Each individual suture strand is 18 inches long.
