Description

  • Plain gut absorbable sterile surgical sutures are composed of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from the serosal layer of beef (bovine) intestines. They are packaged in a solution of 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolmaine
  • Plain gut sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic surgery, but not in cardiovascular, neurological or microsurgery
  • When Plain, Chromic and Mild Chromic gut absorbable sutures are placed in tissue, a moderate tissue inflammation occurs characteristic of foreign body response to a substance
  • This is followed by a gradual loss of tensile strength and suture mass, as the enzymatic process dissolves the surgical gut until it is completely absorbed

Frequently asked questions

What is the primary material used in these sutures?

These sutures are composed of purified bovine connective tissue (collagen), which is a natural, absorbable material designed to be enzymatically digested by the body over time.

What type of tissue is this suture best for?

This suture is indicated for general soft tissue approximation and ligation, as well as for specific ophthalmic surgical needs.

Are there any procedures where I should avoid this?

Yes. This suture is explicitly contra-indicated for cardiovascular, neurological, or microsurgical procedures.

How does the suture behave during the healing process?

As the body absorbs the collagen material, the suture typically induces a moderate inflammatory response. Its tensile strength gradually diminishes as the enzymatic absorption occurs.

What is the needle design on this product?

It features a C-23 1/2 circle reverse cutting needle measuring 24 mm, which is engineered for effective tissue penetration and secure closure.

What is the length of each suture strand?

Each suture strand in the box is 18 inches long.

Does the suture come with a coating?

No, this specific version of the Covidien Plain Gut suture is uncoated.

How many sutures are included in a box?

Each unit is supplied as a box containing 12 sterile strands with needles.

Is this a monofilament or braided suture?

This is a monofilament suture, providing a smooth surface for passage through tissue.

What is the packaging solution made of?

The sutures are stored in a solution containing 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolamine to maintain their integrity.
