Description

  • Chromic gut absorbable sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic surgery, but not for use in cardiovascular or neurological surgery and microsurgery
  • Chromic gut absorbable sterile surgical sutures are packaged in a solution of 87% isopropanol, 12% water and 1% triethanolamine. Chromic gut sutures are treated with chromic salt solution
  • When Plain, Chromic and Mild Chromic gut absorbable sutures are placed in tissue, a moderate tissue inflammation occurs characteristic of foreign body response to a substance
  • This is followed by a gradual loss of tensile strength and suture mass, as the enzymatic process dissolves the surgical gut until it is completely absorbed

Frequently asked questions

What is the primary use for this suture?

This Covidien Chromic Gut suture is specifically indicated for general soft tissue approximation and ligation. It is also approved for use in ophthalmic surgical procedures.

Are there any specific contraindications for this suture?

Yes. This suture is strictly contraindicated for use in cardiovascular, neurological, or microsurgical procedures.

How does the chromic treatment affect absorption?

The suture is treated with a chromic salt solution, which regulates the enzymatic absorption process. This modification results in a more gradual loss of tensile strength and mass compared to plain gut sutures.

What are the benefits of the Surgalloy V-20 needle?

The V-20 Surgalloy taper point needle is designed for high-performance and consistency. Its 1/2 circle shape and taper point design are optimized for smooth, controlled tissue penetration while minimizing trauma.

Does this suture require special handling?

Because it is an absorbable material stored in a liquid medium, it should be kept in its sterile packaging until the moment of use to ensure it maintains its specified tensile strength and pliability.

Is the needle shape suitable for deep access?

The 1/2 circle arc of the V-20 needle is specifically engineered to provide an ergonomic range of motion, making it easier to maneuver through tissue during deep or restricted surgical access.

Is the suture ready to use immediately?

Yes, each suture is delivered in a sterile storage solution (consisting of 87% isopropanol, 12% water, and 1% triethanolamine) to maintain material integrity, keeping it ready for immediate use upon opening.

What is the specific needle length provided?

This assembly includes a V-20 needle with a length of 26 mm.

Is this a monofilament suture?

Yes, this is a monofilament absorbable suture, which is often preferred for its smooth passage through tissue.

What is the total length of the suture?

Each unit provides a 30-inch suture length, suitable for standard ligation and approximation tasks.
