Description

The 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution is a single dose applicator that supplies an effective antimicrobial kill and long lasting antimicrobial persistence in a single, painted coat, along with significantly greater drape adhesion.

The DuraPrep Solution keeps resident bacterial counts low for at least 48 hours after blood and saline challenge, and at least 12 hours against transient bacteria.

DuraPrep film is intended to be left on the skin and will gradually wear away. If desired, prep can be removed with 3M Remover Lotion (#8610 - 15 mL / #8611 - 118 mL).

Features

3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution Features

  • Active Ingredients: Iodine Povacrylex (0.7% available iodine) and Isopropyl Alcohol (74% w/w).
  • Dries as a primer to a water-insoluble film that immobilizes bacteria not killed, reducing the risk of microbial migration to the surgical incision, even when an incise drape isn't used.
  • Scientifically formulated to protect the prep from removal during surgery, whether from saline irrigation, dabbing with sponges or gauze, or contact with bodily fluids.
  • Clinically proven and cost effective skin prepping solution meets AORN and CDC guidelines for the reduction of surgical site infections.
  • The only surgical patient prep that is NDA approved by the FDA to be applied in a single painted coat with no scrubbing.
  • Latex free.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DuraPrep Surgical Solution latex-free?

Yes, the 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution is latex-free, making it suitable for patients with latex sensitivities.

Does this solution provide 48-hour antimicrobial persistence?

Yes, the 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution is engineered to deliver highly effective and persistent antimicrobial protection through its single coat application:

  • Resident Bacteria: Maintains low bacterial counts for at least 48 hours following blood and saline challenge.
  • Transient Bacteria: Provides protection for a minimum of 12 hours.

This long-lasting efficacy is supported by its dual-active formulation and unique drying property:

  1. Active Ingredients: The solution contains Iodine Povacrylex (0.7% available iodine) and Isopropyl Alcohol (74% w/w) for rapid and sustained antimicrobial action.
  2. Protective Film: It dries to a durable, water-insoluble film. This film acts as a primer, physically immobilizing any non-killed bacteria and significantly reducing the risk of microbial migration toward the surgical site. The film is designed to resist removal by irrigation fluids, sponging, or bodily fluids throughout the procedure.
Is the solution compliant with AORN and CDC guidelines?

Yes, the 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution is clinically proven to meet both AORN (Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines for reducing surgical site infections (SSIs).

This compliance is ensured by its unique formulation and features:

  • Long-Lasting Antimicrobial Persistence: It maintains low resident bacterial counts for at least 48 hours (even after blood and saline challenges) and at least 12 hours against transient bacteria.
  • Bacteria Immobilization: The solution dries quickly to form a water-insoluble primer film that traps unkilled bacteria, minimizing their migration toward the incision site, even without an incise drape.
  • Efficient, Single-Coat Application: It is FDA approved for application in a single painted coat, eliminating the need for scrubbing, which supports efficient surgical preparation protocols.
  • Superior Adhesion: The solution enhances drape adhesion and resists removal by surgical fluids and contact.
Does this surgical solution resist removal during surgery?

Yes, the 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution is scientifically engineered for superior durability and effectiveness throughout surgical procedures. It forms a robust barrier that ensures lasting protection:

  • Water-Insoluble Film: The solution dries quickly to create a durable, water-insoluble primer film. This film is designed to resist removal caused by saline irrigation, gauze contact, or bodily fluids.
  • Long-Lasting Persistence: It maintains effective antimicrobial activity, keeping resident bacterial counts low for at least 48 hours (even after blood and saline challenge) and against transient bacteria for at least 12 hours.
  • Enhanced Drape Adhesion: The unique formulation significantly improves the adhesion of surgical incise drapes, further securing the sterile field.
  • Bacteria Immobilization: The water-insoluble film traps any unkilled bacteria, minimizing the potential for microbial migration toward the surgical incision.
Is DuraPrep a single-coat, non-scrubbing solution?

Yes, the 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution is uniquely designed for a streamlined, single-coat application that eliminates the need for scrubbing. This is the only surgical prep approved by the FDA NDA for this method.

This application method simplifies preoperative routines while ensuring high-level, persistent antimicrobial protection:

  • Long-Lasting Efficacy: Maintains low resident bacterial counts for at least 48 hours and protects against transient bacteria for at least 12 hours, even after blood/saline challenges.
  • Protective Film: Dries quickly to a water-insoluble film that immobilizes bacteria, minimizing the risk of microbial migration to the incision site.
  • Drape Adhesion: The film significantly improves the adhesion of surgical drapes and resists removal from irrigation or bodily fluids.
  • Compliance: The prep meets established AORN and CDC guidelines for reducing Surgical Site Infections (SSIs).
Is scrubbing required for DuraPrep Surgical Solution application?

No, scrubbing is not required when using the 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution. This solution is specifically designed for a single, painted coat application, which streamlines the preoperative process and saves valuable time.

What procedures are ideal for each applicator size?

The 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution is available in two applicator sizes, both featuring the same single-coat, no-scrub formula for persistent antimicrobial protection. The size required is based on the necessary coverage area for the surgical site.

Here are the recommended applications, including the typical coverage area for each variant:

Applicator Size Coverage Area (Approximate) Ideal Procedures
6 mL (50/Case) 80 sq. in. (e.g., 8” x 10”) Recommended for mid-size procedures such as biopsies, angiography, and foot, hand, and head/neck surgeries.
26 mL (20/Case) 450 sq. in. (e.g., 15” x 30”) Recommended for large procedures including Thoracic, CV, spine, total hip and knee replacements, C-sections, and major abdominal surgeries.
How is the DuraPrep film removed?

The DuraPrep film is designed to be left on the skin after surgery, where it will gradually wear away naturally over time. However, if immediate removal is necessary, the water-insoluble film must be dissolved using a specialized product. You should use 3M Remover Lotion (available under product numbers #8610 or #8611) for this purpose, as it is specifically formulated to break down this durable film.

What is the coverage area of the 6 mL 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution?

The 6 mL applicator of 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution covers approximately 80 square inches (8” x 10”).

How does the durable film protect the site?

The 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution dries rapidly to create a water-insoluble primer film that provides multilayered protection for the surgical site.

This film delivers three key protective functions:

  • Immobilizes Bacteria: It traps and immobilizes any bacteria not immediately killed by the solution, which significantly reduces the risk of microbial migration toward the surgical incision, even if an incise drape is not utilized.
  • Superior Durability: The formulation is designed for exceptional persistence and actively resists removal during surgery from common challenges like saline irrigation, contact with bodily fluids, or sponging.
  • Enhances Drape Adhesion: The film ensures significantly greater adhesion for incise drapes, keeping them securely in place throughout the procedure.

The prep is intended to remain on the skin and wear away gradually. If removal is needed, the optional 3M Remover Lotion (#8610 or #8611) can be used.
