Crash Carts
A crash cart is a wheeled, all-purpose container or drawer set that carries life-saving medicine and equipment for emergency resuscitations in a hospital or clinic. Crash carts are often made of a set of drawers mounted on caster wheels, along with a flat top surface and an IV pole. A push/pull handle is needed to maneuver the cart, however it can potentially be moved by one person.
The most important things to consider are the build of a crash cart and how you choose to organize your crash cart. Staff must be trained and certified in proper administration of defibrillation and other medications, as well as being very familiar with where all of these items are located on the crash cart.
At MFI Medical, we carry reliable, durable crash carts from trusted brands like Harloff and Detecto. Take a look at what each brand has to offer.
ACLS vs BLS
The purposes of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) are the same, in essence: to learn the skills needed to save someone in cardiac arrest. However, the techniques and credentials for ACLS and BLS differ. An ACLS course trains medical responders on how to administer certain medications and defibrillation in addition to CPR training. ACLS also covers intubation, intravenous medicines, and various emergency scenarios.
BLS courses are typically reserved for untrained first responders, such as teachers, colleagues, and students. ACLS is designed for medical professionals to build on that foundation and administer more advanced treatments in an emergency and in a hospital.
Harloff Crash Carts
Harloff crash carts are available in six or four-drawer models, with some that have extra wire basket storage or IV poles attached. It’s recommended that the flat-tops of the drawers have a containment rim or bar around the edge in order to secure defibrillation units from falling off; all/most Harloff carts also have this feature.
Harloff carts carry an incredible 12-year warranty.
Detecto Crash Carts
Detecto carts have similar features to the Harloff carts, including the flat-top and auto-return drawer options. The Rescue series of carts include a defibrillator shelf, cardiac board, oxygen tank holder, and accessory rails. The Anesthesiology Cart has a loaded weight capacity of 2000 lb and includes two parking locks and one directional steering lock to keep the unit securely in place.
Detecto brand carts also have a 12-year warranty as well.
