Positioning Pillows
When a patient has a bodily injury or a surgical procedure that requires gentle handling, the best way to improve a patient’s comfort is to use positioning pillows. MFI carries a wide variety of body positioning pillows, support cushions, and bolsters to help keep your recovering patients comfortable.
What is a Positioning Pillow?
A positioning pillow can take many forms! Some common shapes are wedges and bolster rolls, which can support areas of the body by elevating them or positioning the body to relieve pressure on an area. These pillows are typically used to keep a patient stationary in a certain position as well, whether it’s to relieve pressure or expose an area of the body for surgery and treatment.
Positioning pillows are typically foam blocks, varying in densities, that can come as covered or uncovered. All the brands we offer have pillows that come with covers, while Joerns also offers plain pillows without covering. Regardless of covering, all of these pillows can be used above a bed sheet or underneath a bed sheet.
Dynatronics positioning pillows are also covered with Naugahyde fabric, which covers a high-density urethane foam that is easy to clean. They’re also a sturdy foam material that won’t “sink” when weight is applied.
Surgical Positioning Pillows
HK Surgical has specially designed their pillows to be used in surgery, such as liposuction and other plastic surgery treatments. The Midine pillow positions the patient in a way that makes it easier to access high-fat areas targeted for liposuction. The pillow is also highly dense for support, but cushioned enough to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure.
Targeted Support Cushions
While Dynatronics and HK Surgical offer versatile bolsters and wedges that are multi-use, Joerns offers more cushions and pillows with targeted purposes. For example, Joerns carries a foot protector that completely envelops the foot and ankle to support and cushion foot injuries. Another example is the cast elevator, which is a wide foam block that is specially designed to protect a cast while a patient is sleeping or resting.
Joerns support pillows and cushions are best for providing extra support to specified areas of the body, while wedges and bolsters can be used for general placement anywhere. Caregivers can also combine both models, using wedges and bolsters to prop up patients in a certain position, and utilizing the support cushions to protect a healing area.
